Advancing Racial Justice Through Storytelling

Humor, honesty, and vulnerability take center stage

On June 24, 2026, a well-attended audience gathered at Hatheway Hall on the campus of Lewis and Clark Community College for A Day in the Life, an original devised theater production presented by 3 Purple Coats Productions in partnership with YWCA Racial Justice Committee.

The performance blended laughter, deeply personal storytelling, and moments of remarkable vulnerability. Through scenes inspired by real-life experiences, the cast explored race, identity, relationships, heartbreak, healing, and hope. Audience members responded with enthusiasm and appreciation for a production that entertained while also encouraging reflection and meaningful conversation.

Made possible through the Healing Illinois Initiative, A Day in the Life advanced YWCA's commitment to racial justice by using creativity, dialogue, empathy, and community connection to spark meaningful conversations. Audience members embraced the performance, demonstrating how shared stories can deepen understanding, broaden perspectives, and build common ground across differences.

The production showed that theater does far more than entertain. It challenges audiences to reflect, inspires honest dialogue, and brings people together to strengthen understanding and foster positive change.

Created Through Collaboration

Unlike a traditional play based on an existing script, A Day in the Life emerged from a collaborative creative process led by Leah Becoat of 3 Purple Coats Productions. Over the course of several months, community members met regularly to share their stories, engage in honest conversations, and transform their lived experiences into an original theatrical production.

Participants devoted countless hours to writing, rehearsing, refining scenes, and supporting one another through a process that required trust, courage, openness, and a willingness to be vulnerable. As they listened, collaborated, and created together, they built lasting relationships and discovered the power of sharing their experiences with others.

Their commitment, creativity, and authenticity shaped a performance that was funny, heartfelt, thought-provoking, and deeply human—inviting audiences to laugh, reflect, and connect through the universal power of storytelling.
